I think what happens is that being known for that genre tells you something else about me. “I can’t tell you – other people have to make that decision. Still, given her roots in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early ’60s, where Collins mingled with everyone from Bob Dylan and Joan Baez to Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul and Mary, we wondered whether in some way she still identified herself as a folk artist, or whether that felt too confining for the artist she became. It’s easy to hang the label of folk singer on Judy Collins – it’s where her career began in the late ’50s, interpreting traditional murder ballads and sea chanties.
